Attention Parents:

No one likes unsolicited advice, but we're rapidly approaching D-Day here -- Ruthie's due in like five weeks -- so here's your big chance. Those of you with children, and you know who you are, give me your Number One best piece of parenting advice.

Since you asked...and only because you did...never, never, never put the kid ahead of the love that conceived him.

There's no way to top what Andrew said, but I'll do what I can to give my two-cents. Expect, but don't demand; dream, but don't push your dreams on them; love them as their parents and not as their friends.

That is, until that magical day when you're staring at an adult who is your child. If you've done it anywhere near right, THEN you'll be able to love him as a child AND as a friend.

One more thing that I forgot to mention: The Grace of God makes up for a lot of failures; don't beat yourself up when you make a parenting mistake. Just hand it over.

The above advice is far better than mine, childless wanker that I am: Don't fret the ass-wiping days; one day he'll be wiping yours.
