I'm sorry, Ben. Did I miss something? I don't know much about America's favorite pastime. See, having grown up a fan of the Tigers, we haven't had much to watch or cheer for since that fantastic '84 season. In fact, the most memorable Tiger (in my VAST knowledge of baseball, anyway) was a radio announcer...
But I did see Ryan pitch against one of the Chicago teams back in the day -- There are two Chicago teams, right? Oh, and my cousin once pitched for a minor league team. At least, I think he was a cousin. (Maybe a second cousin? An aunt's ex's stepson? I *think* we're related; his last name is Jones.) -Nate

Nate, I'm just messing with you. Nolan Ryan was a stud--I just never liked him. The tall guy you're thinking of is Randy Johnson--definitely one of the five best lefties ever.

These are all great names and this is fun. Of course I have an opinion, but for the time being I'm keeping it to myself. I'm interested to see if anyone comes up with my guy. And how proud am I to have a wife who knows that Christy Matthewson belongs in this conversation?

No, no, no. Though it's a total mystery to me why Jack Morris doesn't get more Hall of Fame support than he does. (By the way, the '84 Tigers are my single all-time favorite team.)
Sandy Koufax?

Bret Saberhagen? Steve Carlton? Tom Seaver? How about the Tigers' Willie Hernandez, then? Or, going simply on fun names, Catfish Hunter?That just about depletes my knowledge of baseball, so if one of those isn't The Best Pitcher Ever, I won't be the one to guess it.
Tom Seaver does get some votes when this kind of thing comes up. And Koufax is one of my guys (though the six mediocre seasons he had before his six great ones keep him from being our winner). Did you know he was a University of Cincinnati Bearcat? Played on the basketball team too. I like him anyway.
Walter Johnson.
Christy Matthewson was MUCH better looking than Walter Johnson. Have I taught you nothing in these 10 years?
