Okay, so I'm 32 years old and have just discovered To Kill a Mockingbird. Somehow I missed it in High School--which is probably just as well. What a great book!
why do they force people to read the good stuff in high school when they know we won't? why don't they make us read garbage like "left behind," so it can be properly ignored? anyway, ben, i grew up next door to a guy i could have sworn was boo radley. he used to hide under the hood of his car pretending to tinker with things while i was shooting basketball in our driveway. it used to really weird me out. i remember one day i didn't know he was out there and my ball bounced over his fence. i leaned over the fence to get the ball and we both saw each other at the same time. he hit his head on the hood in his surprise. i jumped about 8 feet in the air (it's my story and i can say that if i want to. maybe it was 10 feet) and ran in the house as fast as i could. it was hilarious. for the next month he didn't come out of the house at all if he thought i'd be there. poor guy.
And as for why we require students to read such things when we know they won't, I have no idea. What's worse is all they remember about that book when they get to be our ages is that they hated it and they won't pick it up again.
Good thing is that other stuff is out there for our kids. OK, so what if it IS of the "Left Behind" caliber, for the most part? That's what they like now anyway. And some day they might end up reading something of value, even if it is totally by accident.
Ever hear of *The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things"? I guarantee I won't be able to keep it on my high school library shelves this year. For that matter, some of what they read makes *LB* look pretty darned good.
Kristy, at the moment our church is spread out pretty good; I suppose most of us are just getting off work. (Sorry I'm an incurable smartass.) We meet officially twice a week in our home (on the west side of Cincinnatuh) and unofficially several more times a week in myriad combinations and diverse locations. It's a cool bunch of people--I love them.

Congratulations on "stumbling" across it! It's one of my very favorites.
It may be a good thing you didn't discover it until now. High school may have ruined it for you.
