Here's Another One

What's the greatest pair of songs ever to appear back to back on the same (non-greatest hits) album? At the moment I'm thinking of "Life is Sweet" & "Kind and Generous" from Natalie Merchant's Ophelia, though as soon as I write that I wonder about "Galileo" & "Ghost" from Indigo Girls' Rites of Passage. What say ye?

"Brain Damage" and "Eclipse" from Dark Side of the Moon should at least get honorable mention. -Ted

2. Rock and Roll
3. The Battle of Evermore
4. Stairway To Heaven
5. Misty Mountain Hop
6. Four Sticks
7. Going To California
8. When The Levee Breaks
Greatest album all time. Not just 2 great songs in a row...8!

I can't decide whether the correct answer is, from U2's The Joshua Tree: "Where the Streets Have No Name" & "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", or "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" & "With or Without You"? I lean towards the latter.

Complicating matters, however, is Lenny Kravitz' album Let Love Rule. Is the best back-to-back combination therein (and thereby, Of All Time) "Sittin' on Top of the World" & "Let Love Rule", "Mr. Cab Driver" & "Rosemary", or "Rosemary" & "Be"?

Hmmmm.... Some tough choices.

This is fun. Drew, I love you, but while it is fabulous IV isn't even the greatest Zeppelin album ever.

But now that I think about it I realize that I'm in over my head picking a Led Zeppelin fight with you, so I'd like to officially retract my previous comment.

it's interesting you'd say that...because, while i do think 1v is the best, it's not my favorite...that would be iii...hangman, hangman, wait a little while...ah...sweet...where's the ganja?

Interesting indeed. I've always thought III was the best, but Houses of the Holy has always been my favorite. Nothing feels as good as "The Rain Song."

I think I may fall in line with the poster about U2's "The Joshua Tree"...

From that one guy:
(linked through Michael Wilson through David Dark through Sarahmasen.com through the message boards there)

Although the first one is not necessarily the best song by itself, the transition between "I'm Sensitive" and "You Were Meant For Me" on Jewel's "Pieces of You" album is one of the best ever. I agree with the praise for "Ophelia" (sublime to no end), but I think "Life is Sweet" may drag in a spot or two. I'll keep looking for another example.

Welcome aboard, Mystery Man. I agree completely about Jewel's stuff.
